Silicon Valley Clean Water embarked on a comprehensive, multi-year program known as RESCU (Regional Environmental Sewer Conveyance Upgrade). This initiative addresses critical issues related to aging infrastructure, capacity constraints, environmental regulations, and the need for increased resiliency in the face of climate change.
As part of a progressive design-build team, Power was responsible for the design, construction, permitting, start-up, commissioning, and closeout of the underground and heavy civil work between pump station properties. One major component of the project was the Belmont Gravity Pipeline.
Our main goal was to reroute the City of Belmont's sanitary sewer flows, steering them away from the Belmont Pump Station towards the new gravity connections at the San Carlos Pump Station. This involved the installation of a 4,600-foot-long, 36-inch diameter gravity pipeline. The entire process was carefully carried out in eight well-planned phases along a major industrial roadway.
To ensure minimal disruption to local businesses, each phase was strategically scheduled. Throughout the project, we seamlessly executed tunneling, jack-and-bore microtunneling, final piping connections, and civil restoration at each pit location. The installation of the 36-inch gravity pipe was a precision job, primarily accomplished through microtunneling between jacking and receiving pits. Additionally, there was an open-cut portion, with depths ranging from 20 to 35 feet, employing sheet pile and steel bracing shoring systems. This meticulous approach not only met the technical requirements but also aimed at being considerate to the businesses and community affected by the project.
The Belmont Gravity Pipeline stood out as a major achievement for Power, amidst various projects tied to SVCW's RESCU program. Successfully finishing the pipeline infrastructure and completing all roadway and civil restorations marked significant milestones for everyone involved. These accomplishments showcase our commitment and expertise in effectively delivering progressive design-build projects for crucial infrastructure in the Bay Area.
