Power received the PDCA Pile Driving Project of the Year award in the Marine category (under $5 million) for our work on this project. The project restored the structural integrity of various docks at Berkeley Marina, ensuring the marina’s long-term stability, ability to withstand extreme weather, and reduced future maintenance needs.
Pile driving played a pivotal role. Eighty-three (83) deteriorated timber piles were safely extracted, making way for the installation of sixty-four (64) new 16-inch octagonal precast/prestressed concrete piles. Localized dock repairs were also conducted, and steel pile guides were installed with each concrete pile, further enhancing the stability and longevity of the floating dock system.
This project fell under the jurisdiction of four regulatory agencies: the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB), and the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Each agency established stringent environmental standards. Given our extensive experience working within these jurisdictions, we not only met but exceeded the requirements set by these regulatory bodies.
Despite some hurdles, such as pile driving within a busy marina and navigating narrow fairways, the project team successfully upgraded Berkeley Marina through the replacement of timber piles with concrete and steel piles, as well as localized dock repairs.
